I am in the marketing communications business, so I pay a lot of attention to words. I've always been told that the most powerful words in marketing are "Free" and "Sex."
Judging from the response to my recent post about Valentine's Day, I can attest that putting the word "Sex" in a headline draws in far more readers than most of the drivel I post on this blog.
But you can't beat free....
A guy was interviewed on CNN as he got off the Carnival Cruise floating outhouse, where he'd spent a week stranded on a ship that had caught fire, had no power, sewage everywhere, and only condiments to eat. He and other passengers were offered a refund, a flight home, $500, and -- get this -- a credit for a free 7-day Carnival Cruise. (Remember, it was only a year ago that 32 people died when a Carnival Cruise ship wrecked and took on water).
Asked whether he'd ever redeem that "prize" of a free cruise as compensation for his nightmare, the guy said, "Well yeah ... how can you turn down a cruise if it's FREE!"
